Soapbox: Motion controls? Sorry no thanks.
Let me begin by saying I'm all for innovation in videogames, looking for new ways to play and expirence the games we love so much is great in and of itself, but there is a evil to this. With great innovation comes great tragedy. I think you all know of what I speak of.
Motion controls.
Now if you want to get technical motion controls date back to the NES light gun. Come to think about it Nintendo had all sorts of gimicks to draw in users. Which is why I don't get these people claiming Nintendo has "gone casual" or "gimicky" It's been thier nature from the start. Find new ways to play.
Which comes to he beast that is the Nintendo Wii, with 50 million sold Nintendo has a money printer that has no signs of slowing down. NPD reports 3.8 million Wii's sold in Christmas of 2009. Which is very impressive.
"But Tim! Good sales must mean people love these motion controls and they must be a good not evil!"
Ahh sweet young Sally, to be pure and blind as you. Let me get to my point. While I applaud Nintendo for going forward with a risky business move, turning the industry upside down and getting more people to game than ever before. I must now say it is not Nintendo that is the evil here, oh no. Just because you do such things do not make you an evil. It is the followers, the copiers, the competition.
Microsoft and Sony are what is going to turn this into a full blown Titanic situation.
So instead of boring you with details here's the skinny, the pulp, the straight facts.
So MS and Sony go ahead play the game safe upgrading graphics capabilites listening to the markets needs for advanced tech and shiny things, but in a year or two time, they have fallen way, way WAY behind Nintendo who hasn't been #1 since forever. They're losing money, consumers want something new, fresh they're saying "Forget graphics I want fun!" MS and Sony flabbergasted go back to their little workshops and come up with a plan. "Lets do what they're doing! We can innovate!" So what do they do? A camera and a glow wand.
Now you must be thinking where the evil comes in, so here it is.
Sony and Microsoft are doing this for the money, where as Nintendo pure of heart wanted to innovate and change the direction of gaming MS and Sony have dollar signs in thier eyes hoping to clutch some of this new found market.
This will eventually destroy gaming as we know it.
How it will? I can't say at the moment, but use your imagination. Ask any anylsist, reporter, gamer. The dark days are coming my friends. Pushed by greed and need for more power and control the judgement days are moving in.
Where will you stand?
Fool! You need to
